Every year, The Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover sponsors a sewing competition on the PatternReview website for both first and second prize.

This year I chose the Active Wear category to sponsor because it’s a new category. And I was curious to see what garments would be submitted for entry.

The criteria is very broad. To create clothing for any active situation. From bathing suits to cross country skiing gear.

I learned to sew when I was 12 years old. And for the following 25 years I made everything from overcoats to lingerie. And for my home, from slipcovers for my living room furniture to quilted bedspreads to drapes and curtains to lamp shades.

Even though I no longer sew for pleasure, I know and appreciate the effort that goes into creating a garment.

The first and second place winners this year have created outstanding garments.

First prize was awarded to Deanna McLaughlin for her Track and Field jacket.

Deanna needed a jacket for training for track & field.

Disappointed that she couldn’t find something she liked, she decided to take matters in her own hands.

Deanna altered a Burda pattern to reduce the height of the stand up collar, and added a detachable hood and patch pockets.

That’s one of the greatest joys in sewing. Changing a pattern to suit your individual desires.

The detail in this jacket is intricate and you can see that Deanna is a very experienced sewer and deserving of first prize.

Second prize was awarded to Christina Granatier for her Figure Skating Dress for her 4 year old niece.

Christina used stretch velvet with a contrasting lycra daisy print fabric.

The fact that the dress is full coverage is important because she wants her niece to be warm while skating.

Little lycra floral print cuffs were added to match the skirt.

If you look at the photo, laying on the left hand side, you can see she also made a matching pink velvet headband.

Cute, isn’t it?

Her lucky and appreciative niece thinks it’s the most beautiful dress ever!

My congratulations go to both Deanna and Christina for their sheer imagination in creating such outstanding garments.

Their prizes will be winging their way to Deanna in Graz Austria and Christina in Coal Valley Illinois USA on Tuesday, 23rd February!

When I emailed Deanna and Christina, asking them to select their colour preference, I was gobsmacked at their excitement in receiving their prizes of The Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover, Superior Felt Underlay and Best Boy Pressing Cloth package.

Christina emailed me this snippet of information.

I quote her here.

I am absolutely thrilled to win this prize as I make a lot of fitted jackets to show my Western Pleasure Horse in and these products will definitely make the pressing job more accurate and easier for me.

Deanna was equally as excited to receive her prize. Because, as she says:

I’m really looking forward to the cover. My boyfriend always complains because I’m always gluing over mine with interfacing and hem tape.

Now I can set up a second ironing table just for clothes and not
for “sewing”.

It sounds like The Fitz Like A Glove™ Ironing Board Cover will be fulfilling its role as a simple solution for a difficult problem by introducing an air of calm and serenity into the ironing room for the entire family!
